Understanding the Effects of Cannabis

Cannabis is the most commonly used psychotropic drug in the United States, after alcohol. It is a plant that contains several compounds, including THC. The THC quickly passes into the bloodstream, where the chemical affects the brain and other organs. When smoked, the effect is nearly instantaneous. When ingested, effects generally occur within 30 minutes to an hour.

THC acts on specific bran cell receptors, which causes the “high” people feel. Other effects of marijuana use include:

  • altered senses (for example, seeing brighter colors);
  • altered sense of time;
  • changes in mood;
  • impaired body movement;
  • difficulty with thinking and problem-solving;
  • impaired memory;
  • hallucinations (when taken in high doses);
  • delusions (when taken in high doses); and/or
  • psychosis (risk is highest with regular use of high potency marijuana).

Although physical addictions to cannabis may be less severe than other drugs, that doesn’t necessarily mean people can easily quit without issues. Some people can form deep chemical dependencies to cannabis and even experience withdrawal symptoms that make quitting more difficult.

Cannabis addiction (marijuana addiction) might not seem like a big deal, but if you’ve formed a chemical dependency to the drugs, they can make it difficult to enjoy your life. Get help at Wyoming Recovery’s cannabis rehab facility in Casper, Wyoming.

Because marijuana can relax the central nervous system, it can be classified as a sedative.
